INTRODUCTION
Every 2 years or so, we get a new Master Grade RX-78-2. And the most recent has been the subject of heavy debate. People love the new flexibility, but not everyone is a fan of the proportions. It's heavily based on the original animation, which lacks the intricate detail of past models. However, it definitely has a certain charm to it, which appealed to me.
However, thats all subjection, and has no real affect on my review, so let's move on.
|
HEAD UNIT
Pretty Great all around. Great movement in all directions. You don't have to detail the vents at all, as the internals take care of that fore you. Sticker for the eyes and sensors. The V-fin might need a little glue, as it has a tendency to fall out, but that's an easy fix.
|
BODY UNIT
The body is another slam dunk. Get used to that on this kit. The core fighter can be turned into a core block, and put inside, however unlike some past models that incorporated this feature, it doesn't restrict movement at all. You can pose the gundam without the corefighter, but it doesn't have the same stability.
The backpack is simple in design. The beam sabers have a bit of movement. The slots the sabers fit in, can be pushed inside the backpack when not in use. It also has a peghole for the shield.
Beyond that, the body has a little bit of movement both in the chest, and the middle of the waist. the middle piece of the skirt armor does restrict turning of the waist somewhat, so it's not perfect, but it's darn close.
|
ARM UNIT
Speaking of perfect...
Not a whole lot to say here. The shoulder joint allows the arm to be shifted inward almost 90 degrees, and the elbow is double jointed. The hands are the subject of controversy, as they are oversized, compared to past versions, but this all in keeping with the animation styling of the kit, so it's a good fit.
|
LEG UNIT
Oh look. More excellence. The skirt armor is pretty standard master grade stuff. There is a peg hole in the back, that the bazooka or beam rifle can attach to.
the shield is great. The peg has a hinge, so you can attach it so it is on the side or back of the forearm. And the handle can slide up and down. There is a little blast shield that slides up and down. You can also put the beam rifle on the back.
The legs themselves have incredible articulation. It can bend back all the way so the calf is touching the thigh. And the foot is actually split into 3 pieces. I've seen a lot split into 2, but this is definitely a first for me.

WEAPONS/BOOSTER/EXTRAS & FINAL VERDICT
This thing is loaded.
Starting with the beam rifle. It has a movable scope, and movable grip. Not only that but it has an attachment for a napalm launcher. It is a little heavy with the NL on it, and the arm might droop sometimes, but I havn't had that much trouble.
The hyper bazooka is molded in the proper white and gray color scheme. The handle can shift up and down, making it easier to hold.
Standard beam sabers. Nothing to see here.
The beam javelin is clear like past releases, which is a little dissapointing, but not really a big deal. the gundam hammer is the same as past releases as well, if I'm not mistaken. a handle with a little plastic chain linking it to the ball.
Finally the core fighter is fully transformable into the core block as mentioned earlier, and there is even a little clear stand to display it.
I debated whether or not to put decals on, as it's supposed to be based on animation, but in the end I decided to do it, since there weren't a lot, and they were all somewhat subtle. And it turned out quite nice.
This is a truly amazing kit. The amount of poses you can get out of it is staggering. It may be another RX-78-2, but there's no denying it brings a totally different look than previous releases. Unless you really REALLY hate the animation style proportions, put this on your must-have list.
